New Hockey Player Information

Thinking of Playing Hockey?

Families considering hockey often have lots of questions.  Hopefully we can answer them here, but if not, please contact our Recruiting Director at recruiting@northfieldhockey.net!

Where do we start?
Kids ages 4-6 (as of the July 1 just before the fall season they are registering) are considered Mites. At the Mite level, there are usually 1-2 hours per week of practices and scrimmages through the season.

Players ages 7-8 are considered Senior Mites or B8U (boys) or G8Us (girls).
Players ages 9-10 are Squirts or B10U (boys) or G10Us (girls).

Players ages 11-12 are Peewees or B12U (boys) or G12Us (girls).
Players ages 13-14 are Bantams or B14U (boys) or G14Us (girls).

What about equipment?

If you are wanting to rent equipment through our NHA, you will need to check the box on your registration page to reflect this. The cost is $75 and your hockey player will keep their equipment from September 2023 - August 2024. There will be planned exchange dates if your child grows out of a piece of equipment. Equipment Rental Availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis but we will make every effort to have equipment available for each player who would like it.

  • Equipment included in this: Helmet, Shoulder Pads, Elbow Pads, Gloves, Breezers and Shin Pads.
  • Equipment NOT included in this: Hockey skates, Hockey socks, Hockey stick.

Questions about Equipment Rental?  Contact: Maegen Storm: equipment@northfieldhockey.net

When you are ready to purchase equipment, there are many options including Play It Again Sports stores, online gear swaps and eBay are good options for less expensive used equipment. There are also many other options for purchasing high quality equipment or skate leasing within the Twin Cities area.

Wondering what sort of equipment you will need?  Check out our Equipment How-To!

What if my child doesn’t know how to skate?
Most Mites join the program with little or no skating experience. The Mites program provides skating instruction, and the children pick up the necessary basic skills quickly. For kids older than 7, and those younger skaters who would like additional instruction, consider NHA’s Learn to Play Hockey program, offered through Community Services. There are also Learn To Skate programs available through Community Service in partnership with the Northfield Skating School. Most older skaters catch up quickly due to advanced maturity and coordination.

I've heard things about hockey that concern me.
Check out our Hockey Myths - Busted! page for helpful information about concerns you might have about hockey.

I would like to talk to a "hockey family" to see what Northfield Hockey is REALLY like.
Many Northfield Hockey families have enjoyed the program so much, they have offered to talk to families considering hockey in Northfield. If you would like to talk to a current hockey family to answer questions or learn more about the program, please contact our Recruiting Director at recruiting@northfieldhockey.net, who will put you in touch with one of these families.
