Hockey in Northfield is approaching some serious challenges when it comes to convincing our city that the arena needs to be replaced, or at the very least, improved substantially.  Beyond the arena, we have heard from many parents, and have consulted with the high school coaches for both the girls and boys programs, and a common theme is that we all need to rally behind, and promote a strong summer program for our skaters, at all levels.

Summer skill development has in the past been handled by organizations other than the NHA. As a result we have lost our ability to influence the curriculum, and have experienced no small amount of frustration with programming and coaching that has not been in sync with the high school programs.  This has resulted, unfortunately, in the city having a very hard time justifying the cost of keeping ice during the summer at all.  In fact, the city was planning to not open the arena over the approaching summer absent some significant change in the consistency and extent to which ice was being used at the arena.

This summer, we are excited to offer a new program, run through the NHA and for the benefit of the NHA and Northfield’s hockey programs in general.  We have negotiated with the city the ability to run a 7 week program, beginning on June 12 and ending on August 4 (taking the week of July 3 off).  This allows us to extend the program an additional two weeks, while reducing the cost per week by roughly 50%, at all levels.  Prices for each level, and specific days and times for each level, are provided below.

We are offering a program that (in order to keep the coach to skater ratio small) is limited to 20 roster spots per level of play.   So, for instance, at the PeeWee/U12 level, 20 slots will be open to be filled by both U12 skaters and Pee Wee Skaters.  In order to secure ice and commit to the city’s proposal, we will need to have an enrollment established by February 22, 2017.

Also, please understand that the NHA is committing to the city to buy this ice, so it is absolutely essential that we fill each level of play with at least 20 skaters.   In other words, we are asking for your support this summer.  We recognize there are other choices available for summer programming, and competition, but please consider including this program with your hockey budget this summer.  It will keep our kids in Northfield, skating together at their appropriate levels, and will help to continue to demonstrate to the city that keeping ice through the summer is an important, and economically viable, option.

We will be offering the slots to NHA players first. Then, if we do not fill the slots with 20 at each level by February 22, 2017, we will be extending the program to allow skaters from other local associations to sign up.   To secure a slot, we need a $50 deposit by February 22, 2017.   We will then expect 50% on May 1, 2017, with full payment before the the skaters get on the ice.

Further details will, no doubt, be refined as we proceed through the next few months.  We are working to schedule meetings with all NHA teams to answer further questions and to solicit comments and thoughts on the program.   But, for now, here are the specifics:

DATES AND TIMES:

We are offering a 7week program:

12-Jun

Start Date

4-Aug

End Date

3-Jul

Dead Week

Each day will operate as a team practice, including power skating instruction, skill development, and team play strategies in both a controlled and scrimmage environment.  Staffing will include two coaches at each session and we will maintain a 10:1 player to coach ratio.  Players will need to register at their appropriate age level as per USA Hockey rules, and (on a case by case basis if warranted) will be placed at the appropriate skill level by age and ability to maximize their development.

Goaltenders will be offered the program at no charge – this program is not a goaltender specific program, but we need goaltenders.  We will need goaltenders to register for planning purposes, though – and they do not count towards the 20 player limit at each level.  There will be feedback and instruction of drills, but no direct goaltender coach will be on the ice.

For the high school levels, off-Ice strength training sessions will be offered twice a week after practice at the Northfield High School weight room for the Tier1 and Tier2 levels.
