Summer Hockey 2024

Top Tier Summer Hockey 2024 Program Details

Greetings NHA Families,

Northfield Hockey Association will be offering a summer hockey program for the summer of 2024.  We will be running two separate 4-week sessions. If players sign up for both sessions they will receive a $50 discount.

**Please register by May 17th, 2024 in order to assure you get your jersey, shirt, shorts and hat prior to the start of the summer program. You can still register after that time and we will try our best to get you your apparel as soon as possible.

Please sign up for the level of play that your athlete(s) will be at for the 2024-2025 season based on age, according to the following cut-offs:

Levels by Birthdate

  • Mite/U8/Mini-Mites/U6 (June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2019) -- going into preschool/K/1st-3rd grades
  • Squirt/U10 (June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2015) -- going into 4th/5th grade
  • Peewee/U12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2013) -- going into 6th/7th grade
  • Bantams/U15 (Born May 31, 2011 or earlier) -- going into 8th/9th grade. These groups will be combined with the respective Boys or Girls High School program.

Session Dates - NOTE: Priority will be given to those registering for both sessions

  • Session 1:  June 10th through July 12th **No sessions during the week of July 1st-July 5th**  ​​​​​​
  • Session 2:  July 15th through August 9th  

Cost

  • Mite/U6 = $275 per session or $500 for both sessions
  • Sr. Mite/U8 =  $275 per session or $500 for both sessions
  • Squirt/U10 = $350 per session or $650 for both sessions
  • Peewee/U12 = $350 per session or $650 for both sessions
  • Bantams/U15 = $400 per session or $750 for both sessions
  • Boys High School/Girls High School = $750 for both sessions (players can only sign up for both sessions)
  • Goalies = Goalies will pay ½ of the registration cost of their level

**There is an option to pay in full at time of registration or choose a 2-payment option with partial payment up front and remainder of the amount to be paid on June 1st, 2024. If you register after June 1st, then there will only be the option to pay in full.

Weekly themes include:

  • Skating
  • Stick handling/Puck possession
  • Passing
  • Shooting
  • Over/under speed
  • Battle drills
  • Game skills

Sessions to include:

  • Professional skating coach with focused skills session per week
  • Dryland program - This will be run before/after practices and was designed specifically for our program to improve our overall depth as a program. 
  • 10,000 Puck Challenge
  • Weight lifting program specifically designed for hockey players 
  • Access to open hockey ice times throughout the summer

Staff:


Maggie Malecha

Maggie graduated in 2022 from Northfield high school. She was a captain of the varsity team that made it to the state tournament that year where she received Senior Goalie of the Year, All State honors, and the Herb Brooks memorial award. Currently, she is a sophomore on the University of St. Thomas women’s hockey team. She has coached Northfield summer hockey for 3 years. 



Jacob Halvorson

Jacob graduated in 2018 from Northfield High School. He was the captain his senior year and helped lead the boys team to their first state tournament along with 4th place finish his junior year. After high school, he played most of his junior hockey for the New Ulm Steel of the NA3HL with a brief stint in the NAHL playing for the Chippewa Steel. He is just finishing up his fourth season playing NCAA D3 hockey at UW-Stout. He has three years of experience coaching Squirts and one year of Bantams. He has been coaching in the Northfield Hockey Summer Camp for 6 years. 



Spencer Klotz

Spencer grew up in Northfield and graduated high school in 2022 from Northfield High School. He is currently playing junior hockey for the Rochester Grizzlies in the NA3HL, but he has also had a few stints with various teams in the NAHL. He is currently finishing up his last year of junior hockey, and is undecided on what he will be doing next season. He has helped with the summer hockey program for the past few years.



David K.B. Cole

David K.B. Cole was born in Monrovia, Liberia and raised in Pullman, Washington and Amherst, Massachusetts. At Amherst Regional High School, he captained three sports (football, ice hockey and baseball). After matriculating to Williams College, he continued his hockey playing career with the Ephmen, while majoring in studio art and drumming in several bands.  Following graduation in 1984, David settled in New York City.

Ultimately, at the urging of his wife, Janet, he began his coaching career at Joe Espinosa Sports Club in Manhattan. For seven years, he coached a variety of sports there.  Then in 1998 Cole began an11 year tenure in the NHL, where he led the Fan Development Departments of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Atlanta Thrashers.  In 2009 Coach Cole moved to Minneapolis.  Since arriving in the Twin Cities, he has been a head coach and goalie coach at several high schools. In addition, youth associations and St. Olaf College have benefitted from his mentorship through David’s company, Celebration Hockey LLC.

David K.B. Cole is a USA Hockey Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee member, a Minnesota Goalie Development Leader, a level 5 USA Hockey coach, and a retired USA Hockey tenured official. In 2023 he became Executive Director of the Johnnetta Betsch Cole Legacy Institute. David lives with his wife in South Minneapolis. Their daughter, Marisa, is an electrophysiology nurse in Orlando, FL.



Karri Nachtigal and Carey Tinkelenberg

Carey Tinkelenberg and Karri Nachtigal have over 50 years of combined experience as professional, full-time skating coaches. They have developed programs for youth, high school, college, and semi-pro athletes and teams. Carey and Karri are the lead skating development pros for the Northfield Hockey Association, as well as instructors for associations in Lakeville, Minneapolis, Owatonna, and Hawkeye Hockey Services elite training programs. 

Carey Tinkelenberg is the Founding Owner and Director of the Northfield Skating School, a national presenter and leadership author for U.S. Figure Skating and the Professional Skaters Association, and an inaugural business development specialist for Learn to Skate USA. She is a triple Master Rated coach and director, and has trained skating coaches on six continents as a Coach Developer with the International Skating Union. Carey holds a B.A. in Psychology from Carleton College.

Karri Nachtigal is the Head Coach for the District 196 Figure Skating team. She has helped guide the team to top 3 finishes at the International Skating Institute National Competition for the past 5 years. Karri attended the University of North Dakota and holds a B.S. in Education and minor in Psychology.

Driven by a shared philosophy of building skills and confidence for skating and for life, Coach C and Coach K are passionate about helping athletes maximize their potential in both the physical and mental aspects of ice sports. They are excited to be running skating clinics in Northfield again this summer!
